Ein europäisches Kooperationsprojekt zur Förderung der jungen Jazzszene in
Europa im Rahmen der Kulturhauptstadt RUHR2010

2010 ist das Ruhrgebiet Kulturhauptstadt Europas: passender Moment und richtiger Ort, Jazz innerhalb des offiziellen Kulturhauptstadtprogramms zu situieren; aber auch der passende Zeitpunkt, eine langfristige Entwicklung zu initiieren, die nachhaltig die regionale Jazzszene vor Ort und in Europa belebt und dynamisiert.

jazzwerkruhr plays Europe ist ein langangelegtes Kooperationsprojekt zwischen europaweiten regionalen Netzwerken, Musikinitiativen, Musikkollektiven, Festivals und Spielstätten, das auf eine dauerhafte Vernetzung zur Förderung und Etablierung der jungen Jazzszene in Europa abzielt. Nicht Verbreitung grosser Namen auf renommierten Bühnen, nein, durch eine breitangelegte Kooperation soll eine europäische Werkstatt, Netzwerk, Forum und Festival für die junge Jazzszene im Ruhrgebiet und in Europa etabliert und Maßstäbe zur transnationalen Förderung gesetzt werden.

Als Folgeprojekt von swingbeats/Jazzpodium Ruhr verfolgt jazzwerkruhr mit seinem städteübergreifenden Ansatz auch im sechsten Jahr konsequent sein Ziel, die regionale und interkommunale Jazzszene des Ruhrgebiets zu stärken, um den Etablierungsprozess einer eigenständigen und Maßstäbe setzenden Ruhrstadt-Jazzszene voranzutreiben. Dabei liegt der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt von jazzwerkruhr  auf  Qualifizierung und Professionalisierung der künstlerischen Leistung der ausgewählten MusikerInnen, und ist die Förderung durch jazzwerkruhr sowohl Auszeichnung als auch Aufforderung. Die Chronik spricht für jazzwerkruhr, für die ausgewählten Musiker und für das Ruhrgebiet als Jazzregion: Seit 2002 wurden mehr als 100 MusikerInnen und ca. 20 Projekte mit der Förderung durch jazzwerkruhr ausgezeichnet. Im gleichen Zeitraum verdreifachte sich die Anzahl der Veranstaltungsorte und Koproduktionspartner von anfänglich zwei (Dortmund und Essen) auf mittlerweile sechs (nach Bochum 2005 und Hagen 2006 finden die jazzwerkruhr-Präsentationkonzerte nun erstmals auch in Gelsenkirchen statt und werden erneut von der Jazzredaktion des WDR aufgezeichnet).

Allzuoft ist die Förderung junger Musiker beschränkt auf eine lokale, maximal regionale Verbreitung. Um ein kreatives Milieu in der Nachwuchsförderung und die künstlerische Qualität einer Region zu sichern, sowie die Professionalisierung und Qualifizierung der gesamten Szene voranzutreiben, muss über regionale Grenzen hinaus geschaut und operiert werden.
Eine nationale und transnationale Vernetzung von Förderinitiativen bereichert, belebt und dynamisiert die jeweiligen Musikszenen und kommt letztendlich dem künstlerischen Angebot, der künstlerischen Klasse und der künstlerischen Vielfalt der gesamten Region zugute. 
Als Werkstatt, Netzwerk, Forum und Festival für die Jazzszene des Ruhrgebiets liefert jazzwerkruhr seit Jahren einen maßgeblichen Beitrag zum Transformationsprozss des Ruhrgebiets von Industrie- hin zu Kulturstandort. jazzwerkruhr ist  quicklebendige Verkörperung und Vorreiter des Leitmotivs der Kulturhauptstadtinitiative 2010 Wandel durch Kultur - Kultur duch Wandel.
2007 ist ein geradezu idealer Zeitpunkt also, um als etabliertes regionales Projekt aufzubrechen zu neuen Ufern: Mit jazzwerkruhr plays Europe tritt jazzwerkruhr mit Blick auf 2010 erstmalig als Weichensteller, Projektinitiator und Vermittler auch zwischen dem Ruhrgebiet und der musikalischen Außenwelt auf.

Europa zu Gast im Ruhrgebiet, das Ruhrgebiet auf Reise durch  Europa ist nur der Anfang einer zukunftsweisenden Zusammenarbeit!
Mit einer Vorlaufzeit von zwei Jahren wird mit jazzwerkruhr plays Europe ein Kooperationsprojekt ins Leben gerufen, das über initielle Impulse durch Austausch von Künstlern hinaus eine gemeinsame Struktur schafft, die durch gezielte Vernetzungsaktvititäten in den Jahren 2008 und 2009 den vorläufigen Höhepunkt der Zusammenarbeit im Jahre 2010 im Ruhrgebiet vorbereitet und die Basis für eine langfristige Kooperation auch über 2010 hinaus legt.
Durch Bündelung der individuellen Bemühungen, Aktivitäten, Methoden und Zielsetzungen von Initiativen mit jeweils spezifischen Profilen werden Synergien geschaffen, die die Ergebnisse jedes einzelnen Partners multiplizieren.
Möglichkeiten gemeinsamer Projekte müssen im einzelnen natürlich mit den Partnern besprochen, konzipiert und abgestimmt werden: eine internationale Tour etwa mit einer gemeinsamen Konzertreihe, gekoppelt an ein Mentorship-Programm, eine Kolloquium-Reihe, Fachkonferenzen, ein Artist-in-Residence Konzept und edukative Schulprojekte sind nur einige der denkbaren gemeinsamen Aktvitiäten, die einhergehen mit einer zielgerichteten Kommunikation und Verbreitung

2007/2008: Vernetzung und Finalisierung des Ziel- und Aktivitätenkatalogs für 2010 unter Partnern inklusive Verabredung der Methodik in den Vorlaufjahren 2008 und 2009 und der Konzeptionierung gemeinsamer Projekte
In 2008 & 09: Austausch ausgewählter Projekte der jeweiligen Initiativen in einer Methodik, die das vorläufige Endergebnis 2010 vorbereiten muss
2010: Vorläufiger Höhepunkt, Zusammenlaufen und Präsentation der Projektaktivitäten, Kozeptionierung eines gemeinsamen Projektes unter Einbeziehung aller beteiligten Partner unter der Flagge der Kulturhaupstatdt 2010, Evaluierung und Verabredung eines nächsten 3-Jahresplans basierend auf Auswertung der ersten Phase

Durch Internationalisierung, transnationale Vernetzung und Austausch Synergien und Multiplikatoren schaffen: Künstlerische Akzente setzen, Künstler fördern und die Szene festigen

Und somit die kulturelle Vielfalt, den interkulturellen Dialog sowie die Verbreitung und den Austausch von Jazz und der Vielfalt dieser Stilrichtung in den jeweiligen Regionen und in Europa sicherzustellen.

Die Kulturhauptstadt 2010 ist die geeignete Plattform für ein derartiges Projektvorhaben. Es ist höchste Zeit, die Zeichen der Zeit zu erkennen und  den internationalen Wind, der durch das Ruhrgebiet weht, zu nutzen!

A pan-European cooperation subsidising Europe's young jazz scene, within the framework of Europe's "culture capital" RUHR.2010.

Background
In 2010, the "Ruhrgebiet" (Ruhr Valley) will become Europe's "capital of culture" (Kulturhauptstadt): RUHR.2010. Thus, there is no better time than now to integrate jazz into the framework of RUHR.2010's official programme. It's also the right moment in time to initiate a long-term, enduring development aimed at injecting some fresh momentum into the local as well as the European jazz scene.

jazzwerkruhr plays Europe is a long-term cooperation between local and regional networks, music initiatives, musician's collectives, festivals and venues all over Europe; coming together to create lasting links and networks to support and establish contemporary jazz in Europe.
The aim of this far-reaching network is not to put big names on big stages; instead it will aspire to establish a forum, workshop and festival for Europe's and the Ruhrgebiet's young jazz scene, providing the benchmark of a trans-national subsidising scheme.

Why Europe? Why jazzwerkruhr ? Why now ?
Too often, the promotion of young musicians is limited to merely local or regional support. This is an outdated concept. In order to secure the creative drive of up-and-coming talent and the artistic quality of a local area, and to propel the professionalism and quality of the jazz scene, an inter-regional subsidising framework would be the most beneficial. A national and trans-national association of subsidising initiatives (Foerderinitiativen) will enrich and stimulate the individual music scenes and will ultimately widen the spectrum of artistic events, quality, and variety on offer throughout the whole region. For years, jazzwerkruhr has been an integral contributor to the Ruhrgebiet's jazz scene as a forum, network, workshop and festival, adding to the Ruhrgebiet's transformation from an industrialised area to a hub of art and culture. jazzwerkruhr is living (and lively) embodiment and initiator of RUHR.2010's leading motto: "Change through culture - culture through change". Led by jazzwerkruhr, the Ruhrgebiet's individual towns and cities band together as an expression of the artistic potential of this region, lending a unified and unique voice to its multicultural community.
"jazzwerkruhr plays Europe" sees 2007 as an ideal time to present itself as an established regional project and, as such, to embark on new shores with a view to RUHR.2010; pioneering as the enabler, initiator and mediator between the Ruhrgebiet and Europe's music scene.

What is jazzwerkruhr?
jazzwerkruhr - a project aimed at cooperation and development across communities, supporting the network, qualification and promotion of contemporary jazz music in the Ruhrgebiet.

Profile and aims:
In 2002, host organisations ProJazz e.V. Dortmund and J.O.E. - JazzOffensiveEssen e.V., together with Essen's and Dortmund's councils' cultural departments, founded jazzwerkruhr, a project for cooperation and development within the Ruhrgebiet's communities. jazzwerkruhr sees itself as a quality audit and a platform for networking and presenting the Ruhrgebiet's contemporary jazz scene. As a project that emerged out of the "swingbeats - Jazz Podium Ruhr 1999/2000", jazzwerkruhr aims at reinforcing the Ruhrgebiet's regional jazz scene through specifically targeted support, presenting across the Ruhrgebiet's towns and cities, and it has done so for the last six years. Its goal is to propel and incentivise the Ruhrgebiet's process of establishing its independent and groundbreaking jazz scene.

Qualifying forum - The subsidization programme:
Every year, jazzwerkruhr puts out a public tender for the Ruhrgebiet's resident musicians. For the 3-4 projects jazzwerkruhr sponsors, eligibility criteria are: a superior musical and artistic standard, innovative artistic energy, originality and a flexible approach to diverging artistic styles. The projects also require a realistic perspective in order to plan for long-term prospects. jazzwerkruhr's promotional scheme consists of financial and planning support for inventive projects - e.g. CD production, workshops, or artists in residence. The support is customised to individual projects. It will always be devised together with the musicians and agreed on in writing, in form of a contract. Since its beginnings, jazzwerkruhr has promoted improvisation and jazz in schools in a facilitating and representative role: The school project "jazzwerkruhr macht Schule" ("jazzwerkruhr sets a precedent", literally: "jazzwerkruhr makes (a) school") is an integral part of jazzwerkruhr's annual activities.

A platform for presentation: Venues and partner organisations/collaborators:
Every year, jazzwerkruhr operates a targeted media campaign, organises press conferences and tours the Ruhrgebiet with its sponsored projects. Through five concerts, jazzwerkruhr's excellent musicians have the chance to present the fruits of their labour to a broader audience. Since 2005, jazzwerkruhr has secured a more far-reaching exposure of its projects by contracting the WDR Koeln as its cultural and media partner/collaborator.
jazzwerkruhr's track record of the last six years speaks for itself, for the selected musicians, and for the Ruhrgebiet as a jazz region worthy of note: Since 2002, jazzwerkruhr has awarded sponsorship to more than 120 musicians and 25 projects. At the same time, the number of venues and partner organisations has increased from two to five:

Network & board of trustees:
In its networking function jazzwerkruhr links its projects with local music initiatives, artistic venues, the music industry, the media, and educational facilities as well as urban and communal institutions. The board of trustees forms an independent panel, which is made up of representatives from all of these diverse backgrounds. They are responsible for the content and the support of this project, which is unique to the Ruhrgebiet. They are:

Project proposal: jazzwerkruhr plays Europe: Europe as a guest in the Ruhrgebiet - Ruhrgebiet on European tour

With two years' lead time, jazzwerkruhr will initiate a cooperative project, engaging artists to create a structure of an informative network beyond just initial contacts; through targeted networking in 2008-2009, the intermediate goal "RUHR 2010" can be envisaged, founding a basis for long-term cooperation, continuing well past the year 2010 itself. Connecting the efforts, activities, methods and aims of individual initiatives with their specific profiles creates synergies that multiply the effectiveness of each individual collaborator's outcomes.

Preliminary schedule - jazzwerkruhr plays Europe:
2007: Unifying jazzwerkruhr's collaborating partners between 2007-2010: Recruitment and election of goals, activities, and outcomes.
When:  07th December 2007
Where: domicil jazz club, Dortmund
2007/2008: Networking of collaborators to finalise the catalogue of aims and activities for 2010. This includes deciding on the methodology in the lead-time years 2008/09, and the conceptualisation of joint projects.
In 2008 & 09: Exchange of selected projects from each initiative, within a framework that aims to prepare for 2010.
2010: The (initial) highlight: the presentation of the projects' activities and the conceptualisation of a joint project, including all collaborating partners, will come together under the motto of the culture capital RUHR.2010. Assessment and development of a three-year plan based on an evaluation of the first phase.

The aim:
To create a synergetic proliferating effect through an inter- and trans-national exchange network; To establish artistic focal points, promote artists, enable transnational structures, and to solidify the jazz scene; Thus securing cultural diversity, cross-cultural dialogue, distribution and exchange of the wealth of styles of jazz music - across the Ruhrgebiet's provinces, and across Europe.

Of course, the detailed plans and possibilities of joint projects will have to be discussed, conceptualised and decided upon together with the future partner organisations / collaborators. Some of the envisaged activities could include, for example: an international series of joint concerts, linked with a mentorship-programme; double-bill concerts; a series of colloquiums; conferences, artists-in-residence concepts and educational projects in schools; these are just some of the conceivable endeavours that would be made possible with targeted communication and promotion.

jazzwerkruhr featuring Nguyen Le: Kick-off to jazzwerkruhr plays Europe
Commencing jazzwerkruhr plays Europe will be Nguyen Le, internationally renowned French guitarist. Nguyen Le will host a public Bandworkshop for jazzwerkruhr's projects, culminating in a concert held, just as the workshop itself, in Dortmund's domicil club on December 7th.

In light of these exciting propositions, jazzwerkruhr invites its potential future partner organisations/collaborators to a conference on the 7th December, also held in the domicil club Dortmund. (The conference will take place during the day; the exact schedule is to be confirmed. It will end at about 6.30pm with an official project proposal.)
