Los Angeles, Calif. Jan.18, 2004. Special to The Sunday Malibu Newspaper
Word! Ska is back with a vengeance! Everybody is slipping into ska concerts when they're not cooling it with their homeys on hiphop & rap. In France there's just hours before they announce a group is going to appear, and they fill up halls of 2000 or more! The French skinhead bands make their own cds, selling them at the gigs 'cause radio airplay is difficult to get- And then it's only regional or a few hundred listeners. In the US there's more chance but ska has been considered a "dead" music so long its hard to get it cranked and cracking.
In England ska hero Neville Staple (former leadsinger for The Specials) is starting his own CD & DVD label, RUDE BOY MUSIC, with the help of some friends, and is going to pull in ska from all around. Label head Jason Rothberg, in tandem with Alchemy, is preparing a Neville Staples DVD for May release. Recent signings include a Spanish group from Barcelona, Discipulos de Otilia.
Based in Barcelona, Spain, this Ska band knows how to keep a crowd on their feet. RBM brought Discipulos de Otilia to the MTV EMA's in Edenbough to open the very exclusive after-party for Neville Staple and his all star band (which included performances by Donovan and Roddy Radiation) and Jerry Dammer (who played DJ for the night). Quite a tough line up to open for, but the boys of Discipulos de Otilia had no problems, and midway into their first number, they had everyone out on the dance floor. Keep your eye out for this late Spring release. And please check out their website:
Also Rude Boy has its own clothes division, Rude Wear. They are running a competition right now on their website. Go there and come back, you hear? Go to RUDEWEAR.
The Rude Boy Music debut release "Rude Boy Returns," the Neville Staple story, will hit stores worldwide Spring 2004. The first in our Icons Of Ska Live DVD series, in association with Ben Sherman, is sure to please with follow up releases to include Bad Manners, The Beat and The Toasters.
