MALIBU CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES:
WALT KELLER RUNS AGAIN?!
Plus: WAR OF THE VEILS (& Yamulkas)
Malibu's First Mayor Runs Again!?
By Michael Brown
Point Dume, Malibu. Jan. 18, 2004. Special to The Sunday Malibu Newspaper.
Well it's official: Walt Keller, the first Mayor of a newly-incorporated Malibu way back when, is throwing his hat in the ring again. Whispered up on Point Dume a little while ago, Walt Keller has not been able to see any of his programs bear fruit and has felt for a long time that the City Council has strayed way off course in the vision he and others had for Malibu when it became a city. Probably feeling his 'Letters To The Editor' sent to the Malibu Times and theMalibu Surfside News weren't cutting the mustard, and that his last re-election bid in 2000 was a fluke (he didn't win), Keller is back again with renewed vigor to take on the people at the City Council that he feels aren't getting the job done.
Malibu City Council Is The Safeguard
For Heritage Like Point Dume
To the Surfside News, Keller said he was "reluctantly running because something has to be done about a council more dedicated to serving development interests than the residents." The News reported that Keller has said time and again over the last years that his vision for Malibu, as one of the city's founders, has not been realized.
An engineer before retiring, Keller moved here in 1960 and is a member of the Sierra Club. He's a former president of the Malibu Township Council, and is down on record as 'the spearhead' for Malibu's cityhood efforts. He served as co-chair on the Malibu Committee for Incorporation. Wife Lucille Keller is also active in Malibu's community and its politics.
John Mazza, a Malibu Community Action Network (CAN) member, and Malibu Township Council's Efrom Fader have also pulled nominating papers to run. Jay Liebig, a member of one of Don Henley's favorite organizations, Taxpayers For A Livable Community, also tossed his hat in the ring. Mayor Ken Kearsley and City Councilmember Jeff Jennings have declared their intentions to run, and Kearsley has already taken out his papers. One other candidate has filed, bringing the candidates list to six: Pepperdine University law professor Pamela Conley Ulich.
|
With Mazza and Fader residents living on the Point, and Keller a little further out, the western part of Malibu is well-represented in the list of candidates. Mazza is the past chair of the Point Dume Community Association and is on the board of the Point Dume Community services District. Fader has supported Keller in the past, and it stands to reason that Mazza, if he's elected will give a council majority to an elected Keller. Jay Liebig, also considered in the box with the 'good guys' was part of the team that denied the city running an election to combat the Coastal Plan already in place by the state of California.
?!Footnotes!?
Keller said he is undecided whether he will actually run, saying he was reluctantly forced to contemplate entering the race. He will not run, reports Jonathan Friedman in the Malibu Times, if three people to his liking who he feels can defeat the incumbent councilmembers run against them.
Malibu CAN President Steve Uhring said he has considered running himself, but has not made a final decision.
"Take a look at what they've [the City Council] delivered to the city," Uhring said, over the phone: "No ball fields, no long-range plan for a development agreement with the Malibu Bay Company. They've gotten themselves into a lawsuit with the Coastal Commission, left the city with no Local Coastal Plan and gotten the city involved in an enormous amount of lawsuits. Is this the way to run a city?"
"Truth is the issue, and that is what will win out in this election also."

AN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE SOLUTION

Three Planning Commissioners Named
In the seesaw that depicts Malibu politics, three fresh faces have been appointed to take the place of three members of the planning committee that are no longer with us. Replacing the fired Deidre Roney and Rich Fox, and the resigned-in-sympathy Richard Carrigan, Sharon Barovsky tapped Joel Walker, Andrew Stern chose Pete Anthony and Ken Kearsley appointed Les Moss, a former planning commissioner.
Anthony's professional background is in music, while Lee Moss served on the first planning commission for Malibu.
|
Anthony scores and conducts film orchestras for such films as “Peter Pan,” & “Spider Man,” plus other major productions, while Moss is the treasurer of Kearsley's campaign for City Council. In Kearsley's last campaign 4 years ago, Moss held the same post. Moss was also Treasurer for the "Yes on Measure M" committee. Joel Walker, according to sources, is a businessman who was involved with the effort to create a specific plan for the Civic Center. Barovsky believed Walker was against Measure M. Out of town on family matters, Joel Walker was not available for comment.

Santa Barbara's Santa Marina court to hear the District Attorney's charges of child molestation.
Point Dume, Malibu. Saturday 17 January 2004. Special To The Sunday Malibu Newspaper.
Though the pop icon's appearance in court on Friday was brief, it was never short of drama. The judge "scolded" the star for being late by 20 minutes, after being apparently held up by screaming fans who had gathered outside. Later, a foot-tapping Jackson climbed on to the roof of his car to wave to ecstatic fans, marking the high point of a feverish circus unfolding alongside the court appearance.
"Mr Jackson, you have started out on the wrong foot with me. I want to advise you I will not put up with that. It is an insult to the court," Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville said as the court gathered 20 minutes behind schedule. The singer was asked whether he understood the charges –seven counts of child molestation and two of giving a child "an intoxicating agent" - and Jackson then entered a plea of "not guilty" to all.
The superstar is accused of sexually abusing a 14-year old child.
Jackson's defense attorney Mark Geragos said at a news conference in Los Angeles, November 2003, that opportunists were trying to cash in on the singer's troubles.
He vowed to take stringent action against anyone who saw Jackson as "a lottery ticket". He suggested that the singer's young accuser, or his family, were trying to "cash-in" on the star's woes. "This is not the lottery. This is this man's life, this is his family's life, these are scurrilous accusations, said Geragos at the time. "If anybody doesn't think, based upon what's happened so far, that the true motivation of these charges and allegations is anything but money and the seeking of money, then they are living in their own Neverland."
(ed. - Just up PCH near Santa Barbara, Jackson's big sprawling spread is called just that - Neverland.)
The judge ordered the lawyers not to comment on the court proceedings, but Jackson's counsel blamed the media and fans for the delays.
At the arraignment hearings, Jackson arrived late, dressed in dark suit, black sunglasses and a white armband. Standing by his side was sister Janet Jackson. Crowdchaos reigned outside, but sister Janet held his hand as he made an apologetic entrance into Santa Barbara's Santa Marina courthouse. The Jacksons also left in a chaos and Michael played "big-dog" with the fans encircling him ever tighter, wanting an ever-closer glimpse of "Him-Star."Him-Star invited all the fans to come to a party at his Neverland ranch, Saturday afternoon.

A PICASSO FOR PEACE IN MIAMI
Saturday afternoon, before a crowd of more than 1,000 gathered in the name of peace, artist John Quigley re-created Pablo Picasso's 1959 Amnistia on the sand just north of 10th Street in South Beach -- using people as his art material.

JUST FOR THE RECORD.......500....
A bombing Saturday in the town of Taji, north of Baghdad, killed three U.S. soldiers and injured two others. The blast brought the death toll of U.S. soldiers in Iraq to 500. With 55 deaths, California is home to the most fallen soldiers in Iraq.
Nearly three-fourths of the deaths have occurred since President Bush declared an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1. In contrast, the war in Afghanistan has cost the lives of 100 U.S. troops, the Pentagon says.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
IN SUPERBOWL!
Win AFC Title 24-14 Over Colts
Patriots beat the Colts 24-14 to advance to their second Super Bowl in three seasons. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning watched a perfect post-season melt away as he stood in New England on the field with no more ammunition left in order to rally his team. The Indianapolis Colts were out and Tom Brady's New England Patriots advance to the Super Bowl. They are now 16-2 and have won 14 straight games.
Coach Bill Belichick is 5-0 in the postseason with the Patriots, who won the NFL championship two years ago by beating St. Louis.
Panthers Beat Eagles In Philly 14-3
For NFC Title
In a later game the Carolina Panthers stomped all over Donovan McNabb and his Philadelphia right in the hometown fans' faces.
The game ended on an ugly 14-3 note with McNabb unable to play his game, and getting unmercilessly sacked time and time again.
He suffered bruised ribs at the end of the first half and went out of play. In the second half nothing was happening for the Eagles offense, and the defense had all it could do to limit the Panthers' points to 14.
SUPER BOWL:
Patriots against the Panthers February 1, 2004,

...continues: A Superstar Pleads: Michael Jackson : "Not Guilty"

"Mr. Jackson, you have started out on the wrong foot with me. I want to advise you I will not put up with that. It is an insult to the court."
Rodney Melville, Superior Court Judge
|
"We regret that he was late this morning," Benjamin Brafman of Jackson's defense team said. "We will see to it that it never happens again, and we apologize to the court for this inconvenience."
His mother & father, Katherine and Joe, along with his brother Jermaine, were waiting in the courthouse as Jackson arrived.
Since flying in from Vegas to be arrested 20 November, 2003 following a police raid on his ranch, Jackson's let loose a dynamic & savvy defense led by attorney Mark Gregoras that vigorously insists that the charges against their client are all a "big lie."
Just in time for Valentine's Day, Judge Melville's court sets the next court date, a preliminary hearing, on February 13. Michael can come dressed as Mary's Little Lamb, in the original dress loaned from the studio, and blow rainbow valentines to his fans.
He insists he's innocent, & therefore can enjoy the greatest promotion his performing career will get as a boost. For the Real-Die-Hard Jackson fans, his innocence is a foregone conclusion.
Huge banners in the street in front of Santa Marina courthouse, placards even, declared "Michael Jackson is Innocent" and "Leave Him Alone."
Michael Jackson is angling for Redemption, and setting up his next world tour -As we speak. Michael knows that on the heels of all this publicity he'd be a fool if he didn't take his wicked band, some girls with wonderful legs, and all his technological props, and the Black Muslims out of Chicago running the Security.
He could re-Capitalize that almost-depleted Daily Account out of which he spends his money (some say, like water).
His whole group could be dressed in flowing black fullcoats, soft leather patent sheen knee-high boots, black shirts, t-shirts, and real sinister suits, black leather, for the Temple's "commando-guard" unit. Giorgio Armani would love to do it, but Michael should convince Yves St. Laurent to come out of retirement, and design it as a Michael Jackson Collection. The fashion house would rep the line, for sure.
Is This Shot Of The Milky Way, "Michael's Return To Mars"cd cover?
They could call the show, "Michael's Return To Mars," and record a single of Bowie's "Ground Control To Major Tom" mega-single, with Bowie in duo. Sony would cash in on Michael just as he's about to exit the company. He owes them an album.
Where he's going to, which company, nobody knows. England might be a little more receptive to Michael Jackson. Alain Levy, head of EMI Group in London, should wrap him up.
He could "Black Bowie"- pushed by an English record behemoth, EMI Records - the whole world over, blowing out stadiums, selling millions of cds, and then set up residence in Vegas, maybe filling in for Celine Dion when Elton John has his periods. While they try to come to trial with this case. Jackson could do a slow tour of Spain's larger bullrings. Michael could postpone these court proceedings forever.

Hamas spiritual leader an Israeli target since last September 6
|
Israel's deputy defense minister has said that Sheikh Ahmad Yasin, spiritual leader of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, "deserves to die." Zeev Boin said the sheikh "deserves to die, and I would advise him to go underground," according to Israel Army radio reports Friday.
The radio and Israeli newspapers said the military believes that Yasin, who was already unsuccessfully targeted by Israel's army, had personally ordered the bombing on Wednesday that killed four Israelis at the Erez crossing point from Gaza.
However, Yasin on Friday denied any direct involvement with Hamas attacks. The Israelis "know that Sheikh Yasin has nothing to do with military action, but they are seeking a pretext to reassure their people, and cover up their failure."
"Death threats do not frighten us, because we are in search of martyrdom," he added.
On its part, the Palestinian Authority warned Israel against resuming targeted killings of Palestinian resistance fighters.
Nabil Abu Rudeina, chief advisor to Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat: "A resumption of the policy of liquidation will put back the region on square zero, and will lead to an escalation."
The last targeted killing attempt against a Hamas official was on 10 September when Mahmud al-Zahar was wounded in an Israeli air strike on his house that left two other Palestinians dead.

"Death threats do not frighten us, because we are in search of martyrdom". Sheikh Ahmad Yasin
|
Meanwhile, a close advisor to Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, reserve General Amos Gilad, would not be drawn when asked by the radio whether Yasin was now a target for assassination.
"We should never announce in advance what our intentions are," Gilad labeled Yasin as the "Supreme Leader of Crime".
"We will use all means necessary to attack terrorism," the general said, while attributing the relative calm in the Palestinian uprising last month to the fact that Hamas' leadership had been "partly liquidated".
Sheikh Yasin was lightly wounded on 6 September when Israeli warplanes targeted an apartment he was visiting in Gaza City along with other Hamas officials.
Also on Friday, Israeli troops arrested 10 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip overnight. Five of them were grabbed in Ramallah, three in Nablus and two near Hebron.
Israel has kept the door shut at the Erez crossing. 4000 Palestinians who work on the Israeli side at an nearby industrial complex still haven't reported to work.
The crossing will remain closed until after the building is repaired, according to the Israeli Military. And more effective security measures put in place.

Egypt's 2nd Black Box Found -
France's "Scorpio" In Action
By Ras Babylon
Paris, France. Saturday, January 17, 2004. Special to The Sunday Malibu Newspaper.
The two black box flight recorders from a Flash Airlines plane, like the one below, that crashed early this month off the Egyptian coast, killing all 148 people on board, have been found.
Earlier, the head of the Egyptian investigating commission, Captain Shaker Qallada, was quoted as telling the state MENA news agency that they hoped to have the black boxes by Saturday.
"The French teams found the location of the two black boxes recovered the first one, and are trying to recover the second," he said.
"If the recovery operation is successful, the second black box will be turned over to Egyptian authorities on Sunday morning," he said.
The first black box was brought up to the surface by the Scorpio robot of France Telecom Marine. It broke the surface of the water when the recovery operation, which was put on hold, allowed the presence of Egyptian officials to be there for the official photographs.
Flash Airlines In Better Days
The box dubbed "Black Box South" had been found in 1000 yards (metres) of water, 1300 yards (metres) south of the signal from the other black box.
The Flash Airlines Boeing 737 crashed shortly after take-off for Paris from this Red Sea resort, killing 134 French tourists and a Moroccan as well as 13 Egyptian crew members. The black boxes are expected to reveal the exact cause of the tragedy, which Egyptian and French experts believe was the result of a technical fault or other accident, and not terrorism.
